I want readers to know that I love writing. I want what I write to be felt. I want the reader to be able to see themselves in the scenario, whether they’ve experienced it personally or not. I write placing myself into each poem to draw on my own emotions when I’m writing.

I grew up an Army brat, so my childhood involved moving every three years. However, truly a southern gal, I currently split my time in Alabama and Florida with my husband, two Chihuahuas, two Golden Retrievers, a mean cat, and a turtle. I have two sons, who live on their own, a daughter in college, and a stepson and stepdaughter.
Romance novels have always been my first reading choice. I'm a hopeless romantic, and that trait materializes in every aspect of my life. "Wearing your heart on your sleeve" has been a common phrase repeatedly heard throughout my life. Writing romance and happily ever afters comes naturally.
Whether a result of my childhood, or not, I love to travel. Warm weather and beautiful beaches are always my choice destination.

I grew up in a decent area and I was a good student but my family was poor. I wanted to go to university but I didn’t have an idea of how I would be able to afford it. My challenge was to work out how I was going to pay for college. My options were limited but I joined the Navy and served in the Military for almost five years.
The Navy was a great experience for me. I got to travel overseas for the first time to Iceland, Puerto Rico and Panama. And importantly, the Navy had a college fund which paid for my bachelors degree in economics. From there I went on to a masters and PhD. So for me, coming from a poor family gave me motivation. When I was a kid I didn’t know what I wanted to do but I knew I didn’t want to be poor.
I had a vision and I had to find ways to make it happen for me. Military service was part of that. I took this idea of a vision as a motivating factor in success and tried to inspire middle school students to have a goal. I want to inspire a middle school student in years 6, 7 and 8 to think: ‘I want to be this’ and then to understand how studying math can help them get there.
Yuck! My Frog Didn’t Change is a story about a little girl named Trina who learns that she must use her magic to improve herself and not the boys around her. In Just Like My Daddy, Zanthony’s mother compares him to his absent father. Trina represents my hope for our daughters to reach their potential and have healthy partnerships. Zanthony does not have a role model for manhood and a mother that didn’t recognise her language is damaging. These stories have a happy ending that I hope will create healthier communities.
Unfortunately Roy will not be able to attend this year however his books will be for sale at the Mixer.
